A Character Certificate is issued by your area's SDM or Tehsildar based on local police verification. It is not the same as a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) — PCC is for going abroad, this is for use within India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before applying.

Is a Character Certificate the same as a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)?

No — this is the single biggest mix-up people make. A Character Certificate from your SDM/Tehsildar is for use within India. If you need something for going abroad (visa, overseas job, immigration), you need a PCC instead, issued through Passport Seva.

Do I need to visit the police station myself?

No — your application is filed through e-Sewa Punjab or eServices Punjab, and police verification is handled by your local police station as part of the same process.

What is a Character Certificate commonly needed for?

Government and semi-government job verification, college or university admission for some professional courses, arms licence applications, tenant verification, and as supporting paperwork for a passport application.
