Birth Certificate
Register a birth and get a birth certificate from the municipal or panchayat office. Required for school admissions, passports, and Aadhaar.
Service Overview
A Birth Certificate is registered with the Registrar of Births and Deaths — the Municipal Corporation in cities, or the Gram Panchayat in villages — under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act. Since a 2023 amendment to that law, it's become one of the most important documents you can hold: it's now accepted as a single valid proof of date of birth for Aadhaar, school admission, a driving licence, the voter list, marriage registration, a passport, and government jobs — no need to separately prove your date of birth over and over for each one.
The Timeline Matters — A Lot
How your certificate is processed depends entirely on how soon after birth you're registering:
- Within 21 days: straightforward registration, no extra paperwork beyond the basic hospital/birth details.
- 21 days to 1 year: still handled by the local Registrar with some supporting documents — importantly, this band no longer requires an affidavit or a magistrate's order since the 2023 amendment, even though a lot of older advice online still says otherwise.
- After 1 year: this is the one that genuinely needs extra steps — an order from a Judicial Magistrate, SDM, or Executive Magistrate, usually along with a police verification of your address at the time of birth, and supporting evidence like a school record or Anganwadi record.
If your registration falls in that last, "after 1 year" band, it's worth having someone check your supporting documents before filing, since it's the one case where an incomplete file actually causes real delay.
Applications are filed through eSewa Punjab, backed by the national CRS (Civil Registration System). Also need a Aadhaar update once your child's birth details are official? We can handle that too.

Step-by-Step Process
- Determine Your Timeline — Within 21 days, 21 days to 1 year, or after 1 year — each follows a different process.
- Submit to the Registrar — Apply to the Municipal Corporation (urban) or Gram Panchayat (rural) with the birth details.
- Provide Supporting Proof, If Late — School or Anganwadi records are needed for registrations made after 21 days.
- Magistrate Order, If After 1 Year — This tier alone needs a magistrate order and a police verification of your address at the time of birth.
- Certificate Issued — Once registered, your birth certificate is generated and ready to download or collect.
Who Can Apply
Anyone whose birth (or their child's birth) took place in Punjab and was not registered at the time, or needs a certified copy of an existing registration, can apply. Which supporting documents you need depends purely on how much time has passed since the birth — recent births need almost nothing beyond the hospital record, while older, unregistered births need more supporting proof as described above.
