A Character Certificate is issued by the SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate) or Tehsildar of your area in Punjab, based on a local police verification of your address and conduct. The certificate confirms one specific thing: that, as per the records of the police station covering your current address, nothing adverse is on file against you. It is not a general certificate of moral standing, and because the check is local to your area of residence, it does not speak for records held elsewhere. That is why a Character Certificate works for jobs, admissions and local verifications, while a visa or immigration case needs a Police Clearance Certificate instead.

Getting the Details Right the First Time

• Name: write it exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar — a mismatch between documents is one of the most common reasons an application is sent back.
• Address: apply from the address where you actually live now, because the police check is made against it. If your Aadhaar still shows an old address, update it first through our Aadhaar update service.
• Photograph and declaration: use a recent, clear photograph, and make sure the self-declaration is signed and matches the rest of your file.
