Getting married is one thing. Getting the paperwork done is another. In Punjab, marriage registration is not optional — the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2012 makes it mandatory for all couples residing in the state, regardless of religion, caste, or the type of ceremony. Without a registered marriage certificate, couples cannot access government schemes, apply for joint passports, update bank records, or make legal claims on property and insurance.

This guide explains exactly how to get a marriage certificate in Punjab in 2026 — which act applies to your marriage, what documents you need, what the fee is, and how the process works online and offline.

Why Marriage Registration Is Not Optional in Punjab

A registered marriage certificate is required in more situations than most people expect:

  • Passport applications — especially when a spouse wants to be included or a name change is required
  • Visa and immigration — foreign consulates require proof of registered marriage
  • Bank account updates — adding or changing nominees, joint accounts
  • Property and inheritance — legal claims require proof of marriage
  • Government schemes — joint beneficiary schemes, housing schemes, widow pension in the event of death
  • Insurance claims — health insurance, life insurance nominee changes
  • Children's school and legal documents — parents' marriage certificate is often asked for

Punjab law makes it mandatory, and most institutions will ask for the registered certificate — not just a wedding photograph or invitation card.

Which Marriage Act Applies to You?

This is the first question to get right, because the process is different depending on the act under which your marriage falls.

Hindu Marriage Act, 1955

Applies to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. If you had a religious ceremony, you register it after the fact. The registrar records the marriage, verifies documents and witnesses, and issues the certificate. This is the most straightforward route for most couples in Punjab.

Special Marriage Act, 1954

For couples of different faiths, or any couple who wants a civil marriage with no religious ceremony. Requires a 30-day notice period — you file a notice with the Marriage Officer, wait 30 days (for objections), and then the marriage is solemnized and registered. Requires 3 witnesses instead of 2.

Anand Marriage Act (Anand Karaj)

For Sikh couples who had an Anand Karaj ceremony at a Gurudwara. You register under the Punjab Anand Marriage Registration Act and need a certificate from the Gurudwara where the ceremony was performed.

Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2012

This is the overarching state law that makes registration mandatory for all couples in Punjab — regardless of which personal law their marriage falls under.

Who Can Register a Marriage?

Before applying, confirm you meet all of these:

  • Age — groom must be at least 21 years old, bride must be at least 18 years old
  • Consent — both spouses must freely and voluntarily consent; both must be of sound mind
  • Marital status — neither should have a living spouse at the time of marriage
  • Residency — at least one spouse must be a resident of Punjab, or the marriage must have taken place in Punjab
  • Relationship — the couple must not be close blood relatives (unless custom permits under applicable personal law)
  • Witnesses — 2 witnesses for Hindu Marriage Act; 3 witnesses for Special Marriage Act; all witnesses must be 18+ with valid ID

One important timing note: in Punjab, couples can register their marriage one month after the wedding date — not immediately. Register within 3 months to get the lowest fee.

Documents Needed to Register Your Marriage

For both spouses:

  • Aadhaar card — identity and address proof
  • Age proof — birth certificate, matriculation certificate (Class 10 marksheet), or passport
  • Proof of residence in Punjab — voter ID, Aadhaar, ration card, or utility bill

Marriage-related documents:

  • Passport-size photographs — 2 to 4 photos of each spouse, plus one photograph of the marriage ceremony if available
  • Marriage invitation card or ceremony certificate — proof that the marriage took place
  • Affidavit from both spouses — declaring their marital status, nationality, and that both are entering the marriage freely; this must be on stamp paper and signed before a notary
  • For Anand Karaj: certificate from the Gurudwara where the ceremony was performed

Witnesses: ID proof of witnesses — Aadhaar, voter ID, or any valid government ID. 2 witnesses for Hindu Marriage Act; 3 witnesses for Special Marriage Act.

If either spouse was previously married, a divorce decree or death certificate of the previous spouse is also required.

Marriage Registration Fees

  • Within 3 months of marriage: ₹100
  • 3 months to 1 year: ₹250
  • After 1 year: ₹300 + Chief Registrar approval required
  • Certificate issuance: ₹200 additional
  • Hindu Marriage Act application fee: ₹100
  • Special Marriage Act application fee: ₹150

Total cost including certificate: approximately ₹300 to ₹500 for registration within 3 months. Register on time to avoid higher fees and the Chief Registrar approval requirement for late registrations.

How to Register Your Marriage Online — Step by Step

Step 1: Go to punjab.gov.in — the official Punjab Government portal

Step 2: Select "Marriage Certificate" from the available services

Step 3: Register as a new user or log in with your existing credentials

Step 4: Fill in the online application form — both spouses' full names, date of birth, date of marriage, place of marriage, and witness details

Step 5: Upload scanned copies of all required documents — Aadhaar of both spouses, age proof, address proof, marriage photo, affidavit, witness IDs

Step 6: Pay the application fee online via net banking, debit card, UPI, or credit card

Step 7: Schedule a date for in-person verification — both spouses and witnesses must appear in person at the Sub-Registrar's office or SDM's office on the scheduled date. This in-person appearance is mandatory — it cannot be skipped.

Step 8: Attend the verification appointment with original documents and witnesses

Step 9: The marriage certificate is issued within 15 to 20 days after verification

How to Apply Offline at Sewa Kendra or SDM Office

Option 1 — Sewa Kendra: Both spouses visit the nearest Sewa Kendra, collect application forms A and D (self-declaration forms), fill in the forms and submit with all documents and required fee, and schedule the in-person verification date.

Option 2 — SDM / Sub-Registrar Office: Visit the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office or Sub-Registrar office in whose jurisdiction you live or where the marriage took place, submit completed application forms with all documents and fee, and attend the verification on the scheduled date with witnesses.

The In-Person Verification — What to Expect

This is the one step that cannot be done online. On the scheduled date, both spouses must appear in person at the designated office, all witnesses must also be present with original IDs, the Registrar reviews original documents, both spouses sign the marriage register, and the Registrar verifies the marriage details.

After this, the certificate is issued within 15 to 20 days. Some offices provide same-day or next-day certificates for complete cases — confirm this at your specific office.

How to Download Your Marriage Certificate

Once issued, log in to the Punjab Government portal at punjab.gov.in, go to "My Applications" or "Certificate Download", and download the digitally signed PDF. The digital certificate is legally valid and carries an official registration number for verification.

Special Marriage Act — The 30-Day Notice

If you're registering under the Special Marriage Act, the process has one additional step at the beginning: file a Notice of Intended Marriage with the Marriage Officer (SDM) in whose jurisdiction at least one of you has resided for 30 days. The notice is published publicly — a 30-day period follows during which anyone can file an objection. If no valid objection is received, the marriage is solemnized at the Marriage Officer's office, and the certificate is issued on the day of solemnization.

This 30-day notice period is the main reason many inter-faith couples plan well in advance.

Mistakes That Delay Marriage Registration

  • Registering too late — fees increase significantly after 3 months; after 1 year, Chief Registrar approval is needed
  • Bringing wrong witnesses — witnesses must have valid government ID and be 18+; the Special Marriage Act needs 3 witnesses, not 2
  • Affidavit not notarized — the affidavit from both spouses must be on stamp paper and attested by a notary; a handwritten note is not accepted
  • Age proof mismatch — if one spouse's age proof shows a different date of birth than the Aadhaar, it causes verification delays; sort this out before applying
  • Missing ceremony certificate for Anand Karaj — Sikh couples must bring the Gurudwara certificate; without it, the registration cannot proceed

What to Update After Marriage Registration

A marriage certificate often triggers the need for updates to other documents:
