When Should You Update Your Aadhaar?

You should update your Aadhaar details whenever you change your residential address, get married and change your surname, correct a spelling mistake in your name, or update your registered mobile number for OTP-based services.

Types of Aadhaar Updates

Aadhaar updates fall into two categories: demographic updates — your name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number, or email — and biometric updates — fingerprints, iris scan, or photograph. Most demographic updates can be completed online, while biometric updates require an in-person visit to an Aadhaar Enrolment or Update Centre.

Documents You Need to Update Your Aadhaar

• Proof of Identity (Voter ID, PAN Card, Passport, or Driving Licence)

How to Track Your Update Request

After submitting an update — whether online or at a center — keep your Update Request Number (URN) safe. You can check your update status anytime on the myAadhaar portal using this number.

Mistakes That Get Aadhaar Updates Rejected

• Submitting a blurry or partially visible document scan.
• Using a supporting document that doesn't match the detail you're trying to update — for example, an old address proof for a name change.
• Not linking your mobile number to Aadhaar before attempting an online update — this blocks OTP verification entirely, and you'll need to visit a center instead.

How Many Times Can You Change Your Name, Date of Birth or Gender?

UIDAI limits some corrections. Under its current rules, the name on your Aadhaar can be updated up to two times, and gender and date of birth only once each. A date-of-birth change is also allowed only within a limited range of the originally recorded date. Anything beyond these limits does not go through the normal update route and needs a special request to the UIDAI regional office. Updating a Child's Aadhaar (Bal Aadhaar)

Children can be enrolled from birth. Changing Your Mobile Number or Email

Your mobile number is the key to almost every online Aadhaar service, so update it first if it has changed. A mobile number update cannot be completed fully online — it needs a visit to an Aadhaar centre, where your biometrics authenticate the request. Keep the acknowledgement slip, and allow a few days before the new number starts receiving OTPs.

Download and Check Your Updated Aadhaar

Once the update is processed, download your e-Aadhaar from the myAadhaar portal using your Aadhaar number and an OTP sent to your registered mobile. The PDF is password protected — the password is normally the first four letters of your name in capitals followed by your year of birth. You can also choose a masked version that hides most of the digits when a service does not need the full number. A printed copy or PVC card is optional, since the e-Aadhaar is valid on its own.

Lock Your Biometrics and Use a Virtual ID

On the myAadhaar portal you can lock your biometrics so they cannot be used for authentication until you unlock them, and you can generate a Virtual ID (VID) — a temporary 16-digit number that can be used instead of your Aadhaar number for many services. Why an Old Aadhaar Should Be Refreshed

UIDAI encourages people whose Aadhaar was issued more than ten years ago, and never updated, to refresh their identity and address documents.
