Types of Passport Applications
Fresh/new passport for first-time applicants, re-issue for passport renewal or damaged passports, and Tatkal for urgent processing are the three main categories. Tatkal is a premium, faster track — applications are typically processed within 1-3 working days instead of 30-45 — but it costs more and has stricter document requirements.
Documents to Keep Ready for Your Passport
- Proof of Address (Aadhaar Card, utility bill, rent agreement)
- Proof of Date of Birth (Birth Certificate or Matriculation Certificate)
- Recent passport-size photograph
- Aadhaar Card

How to Apply
Register on the official Passport Seva portal, fill the online application form, pay the fee, and book an appointment slot at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK. Carry original documents along with self-attested photocopies to your appointment.
Passport Application Fees
Fees were revised by the Ministry of External Affairs effective 1 July 2026. As of this guide, the standard rates are:
- Fresh 36-page passport (Normal): ₹2,500
- Fresh 60-page passport (Normal): ₹3,500
- Fresh 36-page passport (Tatkal): ₹5,000
- Fresh 60-page passport (Tatkal): ₹6,000
- Minors (under 18), fresh 36-page: ₹1,750 (Normal) / ₹4,250 (Tatkal)
A 10% discount on the normal fee applies to children up to 8 years and senior citizens above 60. Fees can change — always confirm the current amount on the official Passport Seva website before paying.
Police Verification
Most first-time applicants need police verification, done either before passport issuance (pre-verification) or after, depending on your application type and address history. A local officer visits your registered address to confirm your identity — having your original documents and someone available who can confirm your residence ready speeds this up considerably. Some applicants, such as government employees or those renewing a passport with no address change, may be exempt or get post-issuance verification instead.
Note that this passport police verification is different from a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) — a separate document you apply for later, once you have a passport, if you're moving abroad for work or a visa.
What to Carry to Your Appointment
Bring original documents along with self-attested photocopies, your appointment confirmation printout, and arrive at least 15 minutes early — PSKs are strict about slot timings and can turn away late arrivals. Double-check that names and addresses match exactly across all your documents before you go; mismatches are the most common reason for delays at the counter.
How Long Your Passport Will Take
Normal applications typically take 30-45 days, while Tatkal applications can be processed within 1-3 working days after police verification (where applicable).
36 Pages or 60 Pages — Which Booklet Should You Choose?
For adults both booklets are valid for ten years; the difference is the number of pages available for visas and immigration stamps. If you travel abroad only occasionally, the 36-page booklet is usually enough. If you expect frequent international travel, or several visas over the years, the 60-page booklet can save you from applying for a fresh passport when the pages run out. You choose the booklet size while filling in the online application form.
What Happens at the Passport Seva Kendra
- You receive a token and wait for your turn at the first counter.
- Your original documents are checked against the details in your online application.
- Your photograph and fingerprints are captured.
- A final officer reviews the application and may ask questions about your details or documents.
- You get an acknowledgement, and your application moves on to the next stage.
The visit is normally a matter of a few hours, depending on how busy your centre is.
Tracking Your Passport After the Appointment
After your visit, follow progress with your file number on the Track Application Status page of the Passport Seva portal. The usual stages are application received, police verification where it applies, printing, and dispatch by Speed Post, which you can then track with the consignment number. If police verification is pending, the local police station may call you to confirm your address, so make sure the phone number on your application is correct.
Renewal, Lost Passports and Other Re-issue Cases
Re-issue follows the same online process as a fresh application, but you also hand in your old passport at the appointment. You would apply for re-issue when the passport is close to expiry, the pages are full, it is damaged or lost, or details such as your name or address have changed. Passports for Children and Minors
A minor's passport is valid for a shorter period than an adult's — generally five years or until the child turns eighteen, whichever comes first — so plan renewals as your child grows.
