Your Aadhaar says "Harpreet Singh." Your PAN says "Harpreet Singh Gill." Your bank account, opened years ago at a small-town branch, has you down as "H. Singh." Individually, each name looked fine when you got that document. Together, they're now the reason your PAN-Aadhaar linking keeps failing, your bank KYC got flagged, or a scholarship payment bounced back.

This is one of the most common identity document problems in India, and it builds up slowly — one document at a time, over years, until three records that are all technically "you" no longer agree with each other. This guide covers everything you need to know about fixing name mismatches between Aadhaar, PAN, and your bank account in 2026 — which one to fix first, the exact process for each, and what to do when the mismatch isn't your fault.

Why Name Mismatches Happen

  • Different spellings or transliterations — a name entered by hand at different offices, especially when translating from Punjabi or Hindi script to English, rarely comes out identical twice
  • Initials expanded differently — "H. Singh" versus "Harpreet Singh" looks like the same person to you, but not to an automated name-matching system
  • Missing or extra surname/middle name — especially common where a document was issued before a full legal name was standardised
  • Name change after marriage — one document gets updated, the other two don't
  • Old documents never updated — a bank account opened 15 years ago often still has whatever was typed in back then

What a Name Mismatch Actually Breaks

  • PAN-Aadhaar linking failure — this is the single most common symptom people notice first
  • Bank KYC re-verification getting rejected, sometimes freezing the account until it's resolved
  • DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) payments and scheme disbursals failing silently
  • Loan and credit card applications getting rejected over "name inconsistency" flags
  • New SIM activation or e-KYC processes failing mid-way

Which Document Should You Fix First?

Generally, fix Aadhaar first. It's the cheapest and fastest to correct, it's done entirely online, and most other systems — including PAN and many bank KYC processes — ultimately check your name against Aadhaar. Once Aadhaar is accurate, correct PAN to match it, and finally update your bank KYC to match both. Fixing them in the wrong order just means you're chasing a moving target.

How to Fix a Name Mismatch on Aadhaar

Step 1: Go to the myAadhaar portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) and log in with your Aadhaar number and OTP.

Step 2: Select "Update Aadhaar" and choose "Name" as the field to correct.

Step 3: Enter your correct name exactly as you want it to appear going forward.

Step 4: Upload a valid Proof of Identity document showing the correct name — your PAN card, passport, voter ID, or driving licence all work.

Step 5: Pay the update fee (around ₹50) and submit. You'll get a URN to track the request.

This is the same OTP-based process covered in our Aadhaar address update guide — name correction works almost identically, just with a different field and a Proof of Identity document instead of Proof of Address.

How to Fix a Name Mismatch on PAN

Step 1: Go to either the Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL website — both are authorised to process PAN corrections.

Step 2: Select "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data."

Step 3: Fill in your current PAN number and the corrected name.

Step 4: Upload your Aadhaar (now corrected, if needed) as supporting proof — since Aadhaar and PAN names need to match for linking anyway, this is the most reliable document to use.

Step 5: Complete e-KYC/e-Sign verification and pay the correction fee (around ₹100 for a PAN with Indian communication address).

Step 6: You'll receive an acknowledgement number. A corrected PAN is typically issued within 2–3 weeks.

How to Fix a Name Mismatch on Your Bank Account

This one isn't a government portal process — it's purely between you and your bank.

  1. Visit your bank branch (or check if your bank's app/net banking supports online KYC name updates — some now do).
  2. Carry your updated Aadhaar and PAN, since both are now accurate.
  3. Fill the bank's KYC update or name correction form.
  4. Submit supporting ID proof matching the corrected name.
  5. The bank updates its records, usually within a few working days to a couple of weeks.

What If the Mismatch Isn't Your Fault?

Sometimes the error is a clerical mistake from the issuing office, not something you typed wrong. The process to fix it is the same either way — you'll still need to submit a correction request with supporting proof. There's no separate "it wasn't my fault" fast-track, so it's not worth spending time arguing the cause; just submit the correction with the right document.

Related Updates Worth Checking

If you're fixing your name across documents, it's also worth checking whether your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is current — many of these correction processes rely on OTP verification, and an inactive number will stall things at the worst possible step. Our complete Aadhaar update and correction guide covers every field, not just name, if you're doing a full cleanup.
